Tolai Myths of Origin were originally collected by several Catholic missionaries: First was Fr Joseph Meier, M.S.C. who came to New Britain in 1899 and collected myths of origin in Rakunai, Navunaram, Livuan and Ramale Villages; second was Fr Otto Meyer, M.S.C. who arrived in New Britain in 1902 and recorded the myths of the Watom Islanders;. third, Fr August Kleintitischen M.S.C. began his work as a missionary in New Britain in 1900, with his collection of myths coming from the areas around Paparatava, Vairiki, Viviran, Tanaka and Navunaram Villages.

The original collections of the myths and legends were all written in an old form of the Tolai language and translated into German. There are only a few copies left in New Britain as most of them were destroyed during the war.

In the 1960s, Dr Hermann Janssen translated some of these myths from the German and Mrs Brenda Skinner translated others from the Tolai language. Mary Mennis edited the myths, divided them into categories and negotiated with Jacaranda Press who brought out the first edition in 1973. With Jacaranda's permission we now present a new edition of Tolai Myths for the Web, to make it available to more people.

The ABC of Nursery Rhymes was written when Mary was a Remedial Resource teacher in primary schools in Brisbane. It is quite "different" from her other works. It is included here for teachers who may like to use this as a resource in their classrooms.
